Rachael Burns - On Curation

This workshop will take a practical look at curating photography, examining how the presentation can change audience experience and reinforce or subvert the meaning of the work. We will look at examples of different ways of presenting photography and consider the way that the printing, mounting, framing and scale has been used strategically by photographers and curators. The workshop will help you to consider the options for presenting your own work and encourage experimentation.

Rachael Burns is a curator, arts organiser and educator based in Manchester and currently working at Redeye, the Photography Network and on the BA Photography course at Manchester School of Art. She works across various collaborative curatorial projects including FORM collective and the Museum of Half Truths. Rachael curates exhibitions, programmes events and workshops, and designs and produces publications. She is interested in connecting artists and audiences, presenting projects that are accessible, relevant, playful, engaging and encourage discussion and reflection.

Jo Coates - On Northern Narratives

Joanne Coates will lead a talk around working in documentary photography as a working class woman. Discussing making work with rural communities, finding the right audience for your work, and getting commissioned as a documentary photographer.

Cath Stanley - On Landscape Photography

3 June, 6-7pm UK time

Cath Stanley talks about the challenge of landscape photography, with travel restrictions, localised lockdowns and her city surroundings. This last year has challenged her creative practice to explore not only new ways of making work, it has opened up a sense of discovery about her local environment. Her observations document flora and fauna, living alongside major intersections of motorway carriageway and residential areas. These small pockets of greenspace offering so much more than she initially contemplated, yet they become an integral part of her daily recordings.
